We’re committed to using sustainably grown cocoa, natural vanilla flavour and almonds to make our delicious ice cream.
Carefully crafted cocoa
Our suppliers work with farmers on Rainforest Alliance Certified farms to ensure that the cocoa beans we use are not just of the right quality, but sustainably grown, too. By implementing more sustainable farming practices, (such as weeding, shade management, pruning and sanitary harvesting), protecting waterways to avoid erosion by using soil conservation techniques and composting organic materials, the farmers in our dedicated supply chain help protect their farmland for future generations.
The farmers know a good cocoa pod when they see one. Their skills and knowledge ensure that the pods are harvested at just the right time. Once harvested, our farmers carefully cocoon the beans inside banana leaves, letting nature do the work as they ferment for six to seven days and develop their rich, fruity flavour. During the drying process, they hand-pick only the very best and remove broken or damaged beans. Once dried, the beans are gently roasted, ground and blended, ready for us to craft into silky smooth chocolate.
Sustainably grown vanilla
The natural vanilla flavouring used in Magnum ice cream is sourced from the Sava region of northern Madagascar where it is grown by local Rainforest Alliance Certified farmers. The farmers use their skills and knowledge to grow the vanilla orchids – this includes the careful hand-pollination of the vanilla flower, harvesting by hand, as well as creating the right eco-system on the farm through planting shade trees, cover crops and addressing pests with organic methods. This attention to detail doesn’t just promote more sustainable farming practices, it also produces the sweet and floral vanilla flavour that makes our ice cream so pleasurable.
The almonds we use in our delicious ice creams are sustainably grown in California. They are blanched and slivered and their size is adjusted to ensure a good distribution throughout our ice creams. The almonds have also been sustainably grown in compliance with Unilever’s Sustainable Agriculture Code and third-party certified. The SAC, is a collection of best practice principles for farming that hundreds of thousands of our farmers use to make their operations more sustainable.
